Children can learn critical skills far quicker in their native language, letting them also use these skills in a native environment. It is much harder for a child to switch and translate their skills into their native language. Still, it is far easier for children to learn and apply skills in their native language and environment.
Learning in their native language will also help them maintain their social identity. This way, they can discuss their findings with friends and family they communicate with and be able to use much more familiar terms, using their mother tongue.
People usually think and solve problems in their native language. So if a child learns problem-solving in their second language, it will be very hard for them to switch that information and knowledge to their mother tongue. So learning new skills in the same language will be a massive boost to their critical thinking skills and literature as their vocabulary and their ability to convey information will develop because they will always be using the information and words they have learnt on a day-to-day basis.
Because you learn your native language before your secondary language, it is much easier to transfer your knowledge to a secondary language. Hence, skills learnt in the mother tongue do not have to be re-taught when the child moves to a second language.
Children also enjoy learning in their mother tongue far more and learn faster due to feeling comfortable in their environment. Because their environment is the same as the one they developed in, their self-esteem is also higher. Parent-child interaction will also increase as parents can discuss issues and work and clearly see the child’s progression.
